EVERYDAY AT IIAD – NEWS, EVENTS, STORIES & MORE
press & hold
In an academic setting where conventional design education often stifles creativity, IIAD has cultivated an entrepreneurial ecosystem that transforms students from passive learners to active innovators. Breaking away from rote teaching methods, the institution's project-based curriculum immerses students in real-world challenges, effectively becoming an incubator for design-driven entrepreneurship.
When a small group of design professionals—a collective of academicians, industry professionals— launched IIAD in 2015, they identified a fundamental disconnect in design education. Traditional academic models were failing to prepare students for the complexities of contemporary professional practice. Their vision was not to create another design school, but to fundamentally rethink how design skills can be developed and taught—a radical reimagining.
Every story that emerges from IIAD carries within it the pulse of transformation—moments of discovery, challenges overcome, and dreams taking flight. These narratives unfold journeys of evolution: small-town dreamers finding their voice in design, young artists discovering identity through creative expression, graduates reshaping industry paradigms, and change-makers using design to bridge societal gaps. From navigating global corporations to founding innovative ventures
Their achievements—ranging from record-breaking art installations to award-winning films and provocative fashion collections—underscore the impact of a unique pedagogy which prioritises exploration, critical thinking and the ability to engage with pressing social and cultural challenges. These milestones reflect how design can inspire meaningful change, breaking boundaries and representing Indian design on global platforms, as witnessed in these milestones.
The Indian Institute of Art & Design (IIAD) was founded with a bold vision—to transform how design is taught, learned and practised in India. Starting with a small cohort of 90 students in 2015, it has evolved into a dynamic institution with a thriving community of over 1,000 students today. Over the past decade, IIAD has remained committed to its mission, growing not only in numbers but also in impact. Along the way, IIAD has earned several awards, underscoring its excellence and innovation in design education.
The Park Elle Decor Student Contest, known for identifying emerging design talent, draws participation from design schools across India and challenges students to develop innovative interior design solutions. 2023 and 2024 marked the years of two consecutive wins for IIAD students representing a significant achievement in its journey. The winning streak began when two students from the Interior Architecture & Design department made their mark in 2023: Isha Gupta (Batch 2019-2023) and Nitika Jain (Batch 2020-2024).
From award-winning animations to groundbreaking design solutions, Communication Design students have built an impressive legacy in just ten years. Their work spans multiple disciplines and addresses both creative and social challenges.
Founded in 2015, IIAD emerged from a bold vision to challenge the traditional paradigms of design education. At a time when design learning was predominantly theoretical, the institute dared to imagine a different approach—'thinking through making’, which prioritises hands-on, project-based learning and holistic creative development.
This year (2024), WOW’s theme, “Dream Awake,” invited designers to explore their wildest imaginations. Finalists hailed from 15 countries and presented pieces crafted from diverse materials—from reclaimed glass to sculpted metal.
In celebration of 2024-25 as the International Year of Batik, the award-winning Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) in Delhi partnered with The Histare Group to present an exclusive exhibition featuring KHAKHAN, the Batik of Kachchh.
