Pattachitra is one of the oldest and the most popular art forms of Odisha dating back to 5th century BC. Themes for these traditional cloth-based scroll paintings are centered around Hindu mythology, religious stories and folklore. Artists proficient in Pattachitra are referred to as Chitrakaras. The chitrakaras are known to make their own canvas with a gauze-like cloth treated with chalk powder, tamarind paste and gum. The chitrakaras use a beautiful mix of motifs, creative patterns, intricate designs and natural dyes to depict a mythological story.
