Origami Workshop with Ankon Mitra

Origami, the Japanese paper folding art has intrigued and ensnared the creative spark of many artists since time immemorial. Initially introduced in China in 105 A.D., this art form was introduced in Japan in the late 6th Century by Buddhist monks. Over the decades, Origami has become popular among artists across the globe. This traditional technique of paper folding not just unleashes the creative aspect of an artist but is also widely known to augment hand-eye coordination, logical reasoning, spatial skills and synchronization ability.

The students of IIAD from Communication Design, Fashion Design and Interior Architecture & Design programmes participated in the Origami workshop conducted by Mr. Ankon Mitra. During the workshop, the students went on to create an assortment of 3D objects from sheets of textured paper. The major learning outcome of this workshop was to help students explore the innumerable avenues of incorporating the art of Origami to infinite design problems they might face as designers.

About Ankon Mitra

Ankon Mitra, an Origami expert is the Co-Founder and Design Director Hexagramm Design. He graduated from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi post which he went on to pursue his Masters Degree in Parametric Design and Algorithmic Architecture from The Barlett, University of College London (UCL). He has conducted many workshops highlighting myriad geometric and mathematical complexities using Origami, to design students across the country and beyond. His explorations are not just confined to the creation of Origami sculptures but he has also mastered the art of implementing Origami in Architecture which he fondly refers to as ‘Oritecture’.
