The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has fundamentally redefined our relationship with our home. The extended work from home has led most of us to spend most of our time indoors and instilled a deeper appreciation for our homes. The arrival of 2021 has brought forth optimism and a fresh perspective into the interior design ethos. Today, home is not just an address; it is our space of belonging to address our emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. The impact of COVID-19 is reflected in changing interior design trends. Here are the top interior design trends that will rule 2021
Health and wellness as the focus of interior design: The pandemic has heightened health and wellness concerns among the global population. An extension of this consciousness is manifested in the perception of home as a sanctuary to unwind, relax and reflect. Aesthetically designed residences located in a self-sustainable oasis and endowed with state-of-the-art amenities, such as a gym, spa, reading zone and a kids' play area, have emerged as sought-after offerings. The focus on health and wellness has provided a fillip to interior design ideas based on the Danish concept of friluftsliv, or ‘free air life' and circular and biophilic design. Hence, patios, kitchen gardens and balcony decks in homes have become prominent retreat zones, increasing the demand for indoor plants, weatherproof upholstery, cosy patio furniture and drink ledges for balcony railings.
Home office as ‘must-have’ zone: With most professionals working from home, 'home office' is now considered a 'must-have' zone. This trend has prompted redesigning conventional 2BHK and 3 BHK residences to incorporate the 'work-from home' office. These office zones adopt a mix of residential and commercial design elements to make professionals feel at home while working. Such features include a combination of textures and silhouettes, natural lighting, ergonomic furniture, classic indoor plants, etc. Amid Skype/Zoom meetings and videoconferences, products and fixtures that serve the dual purpose of aesthetics and acoustics have emerged as one of the prominent interior trends.
Sustainability gaining currency: The pandemic has reinvigorated our bond with Nature and kindled our desire for spiritual connection with our homes. Residences set amidst lush verdant greenery and endowed with eco-friendly amenities such as green building certification, provision for harnessing solar energy and rainwater harvesting, etc., are finding traction. Sustainability has found a new meaning with natural materials such as jute, ceramic, light-toned wood and live plants becoming dominant interior trends. Similarly, natural fabrics, including matt velvet, linen, etc., are being used in intensive seating. Conscious consumerism has propelled the demand for multi-functional furniture, offering longevity, quality and durability as value propositions. Natural fibre or deep pile carpets and eco-friendly décor such as terracotta and clay have become immensely popular.
Maximalist approach to décor with customization: COVID-19 has rethought the definition of home as an outlet for expressing our creativity, emotions, and feelings. Homes have become spaces to ‘live, work and play.’ Today’s discerning homeowners are curating a distinct interior identity by customizing the design and layouts. Maximalism has become the dominant theme in styling interiors to tell a unique story. Gallery walls, DIY décor, contemporary country look with warm amber tones, mix and match of muted colours with bold patterns, interiors inspired by the beauty of Nature are some of the 2021 interior design trends.
Technology-powered smart homes: COVID-19 has accelerated digital transformation, and interior designing is no exception to this trend. Smart homes based on internet-connected devices that ensure remote monitoring and management of systems and appliances are gaining currency. These smart homes exemplify convenience, efficiency and comfort to cater to an indulgent lifestyle. With professionals juggling household chores and work targets, multi-functional appliances based on next-generation technology have become enablers to ensure efficiency and save time. COVID-19 has underscored the significance of interior design as a key to holistic wellness, happiness and longevity. It will invariably provide a fillip to the demand for interior architecture professionals. A Mordor Intelligence report estimates India's home interiors and renovation market worth between USD 20 billion- USD 30 billion, which is expected to rise on the back of higher disposable incomes and aspiration for an opulent lifestyle. An interior designing course equips you with the design principles of a built-in environment, strong visualization skills, proficiency in the latest tools and software, besides opening a plethora of exciting career avenues.
