Calligraphy Workshop with Shipra Dutta

Did you know that Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., incorporated multiple typefaces and proportionally spaced fonts in the first Mac owing to the Calligraphy lessons he had attended at Reed College (Oregon, USA) a decade ago!

Calligraphy, is a visual art that starkly differs from typography and hand lettering. The practice is known have meditative and therapeutic benefits. This art form involves writing various symbols, letters and words in an aesthetically pleasing manner using serif and sans-serif fonts. We all know that the world’s history is heavy on handwritten texts and therefore, learning Calligraphy can help you gain insight into interesting cultures from across the world.

The day-long Calligraphy Workshop was conducted for the Level 4 students of IIAD from Fashion Design, Communication Design and Interior Architecture and Design. The day began with Shipra Dutta, a renowned Indian Calligrapher, demonstrating the art of Calligraphy through various words and phrases. This was followed by the students familiarising themselves with the strokes and perfecting them by practicing letters from the English alphabet.

About Shipra Dutta
Shipra Dutta is a renowned calligraphy artist based in Delhi. She comes from a family of calligraphy artists who have now dedicated four generations to this craft. Her great grandfather worked as a ‘khatta’ accounts writer in the court of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Shipra has over 20 years of experience in the field and has had worked with renowned international brands like Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Dior, Dom Perignon and American Express among others. Her exceptional calligraphy skills have won the unequivocal praise of VVIP patrons like Former President Bill Clinton, Begum Pataudi, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Maharani Kapurthala and Yuvaraj Kapurthala. Shipra uses a range of media including canvas,
stone, walls, t-shirts and paper to realize this art form.
