Sarita Handa has been a big name for three decades in the textile export industry. Gaura Batra, AGM, Sarita Handa Retail, interacted with students at IIAD’s Industry Conclave 2022 and spoke about the marriage of luxury with sustainability.
The brand’s mantra is to derive inspirations from around the world and create made-in-India products with a global aesthetic.
She goes on to elaborate about how the conventional notion of luxury can be questioned - only shimmer, polyester and silk are not luxury, but hand-embroidered cotton fabrics are also luxurious. It is the story of the artisan behind the art (product) that makes it luxurious.
Talking about the upcoming sustainable range of cushion covers at a premium price range, she added that customers are willing to pay the price for a limited edition unique piece if they know it is environmentally friendly.
Lastly, Gaura stressed on the importance of brand evolution mirroring the evolving mindset of the consumers but at the same time not losing the brand identity. In her own words, “Don’t end up only listening to and doing what the market says. But, do it as a market leader. Say to yourself that you will do it in your own, signature way.”
