Kids are vivacious and energetic people who need their imaginative faculties to be kindled frequently. The space one inhabits greatly influences their demeanor and it is crucial for kids to live in a space that is stimulating as well as relaxing. Designing children’s bedrooms carries different parameters than designing other spaces in the house. The wants and needs of kids vary drastically from those of adults. Unlike adults, kids evolve and grow rapidly. Consequently, their living space should hold the possibility of evolving over time as well. Their bedroom is a multi-functional place where they rest, play and also study.
The children’s bedroom layout should reflect the dynamism of their personalities and hold the potential for creativity and imagination. Their formative years that determine their personality and growth should not be hindered by an environment that does not support them. The children’s bedroom interior design should be done in such a manner that it aligns with the needs of their current state and anticipates the wants of their future state. Following are some tips or ideas for children’s bedrooms that can help one design the perfect abode for childhood.
Prioritize Accessibility: When it comes to children’s bedroom decor or design, accessibility should be prioritized. Their bedroom should be a place where the child can navigate independently. Not only will independent navigation help them cultivate confidence, but it would also contribute to the development of their motor skills. It is a personal space for the child and the child should feel empowered in it. The space should be designed such that the child can walk across the room safely. Any potential safety hazards or sharp corners should be avoided. Decoration must be restricted to necessary items only lest their living space appears cluttered and unsafe. Electricity sources or equipment should be installed at safe heights. While a child who may not understand safety from electricity would not be able to access it, their older future self will.
Include Reading/ Play Nooks: A room should be a place of creative expression for children, not a restrictive space. Dividing the room into smaller areas and dedicating them to activity makes it multi-dimensional and can engage the interest of kids for longer than a plain, boring room that only focuses on functionality. Including a creatively designed reading corner would not only add whimsy to the room but also indirectly cultivate the habit of reading among the children. A corner dedicated to playing where the children can build bed sheets or cardboard forts shall work wonders for the development of their creative faculties and allow them to excel at various skills.
Simplicity is Key: With the aim of providing the utmost amenities, luxury, or comfort for their child, many parents go above and beyond with the decoration of their child’s bedroom. However, one must always remember that excess of anything is bad. A space that is overcrowded with banal decorative stuff ceases to be functional. It becomes dangerous as well because overcrowding makes the space clumsy and kids are not necessarily known to have a keen eye for safety. One must resist the urge to go overboard with furnishing and decoration because the child would soon outgrow them and the time and money invested in the activity would be lost. Instead, parents should aim to go for minimal furniture and decor themes that can stand the test of time or can be easily replaced without a dear cost once the child outgrows them. Simple and elegant designs in the children’s bedroom would be the easiest to upgrade as the child grows up.
Distinguish the Study Space from the Rest of the Room: While all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, all play and no work would also make Jack a dull boy. Education is the most important aspect of a child’s formative years. The child’s ability to concentrate should be cultivated from early childhood itself by allowing them to engage in games that hold their attention. Similarly, it is important for children to be able to hold attention while they are studying and not be distracted by the other facets of their room. Therefore, they should have a designated study corner where other corners of the room are not in the visual range. There should be a separate table and chair for them to focus on their school work. This shall also cultivate compartmentalisation in the child’s brain and allow them to hold space for multiple emotions, feelings, and thoughts at once.
Easy in Maintenance of Hygiene and Cleanliness: Children need to live in an environment that is clutter free and easy to clean. They should be encouraged to develop a habit to clean after themselves so that they can become responsible individuals. Therefore, their room should be designed in a manner that is not only easy for the parents to clean but also for the child. They should be able to access their things when they need them and organize them back into the storage units once they are done. The room should be designed such that the parents can also look after the overall cleanliness of the room and maintain hygiene. A clean space is a happy space and an ideal environment for a developing child.
Consider Loft Beds to Maximize Floor Space: Modern homes might have an abundance of amenities but floor space has been rapidly decreasing in urban housing. To compensate, parents can consider installing loft beds in their children’s bedrooms. Loft beds are a great addition to maximize floor space and add a whimsical and playful ambience to the room. They are extremely popular among kids and teenagers alike, therefore, they have a higher probability of standing the test of time. The lower space of a loft bed can also be replaced to create a workspace right below the upper bed, saving space while adding creativity to the room. It can also be transformed into a reading space or a play space. Many people construct storage cabinets in place of the lower bunk, thus maximizing the storage capacity of their children’s bedrooms.
Ensure Ample Storage: Kids tend to have a massive number of possessions. Right from clothes, to toys, art, and entertainment, they tend to keep everything they like. Not having ample storage may result in a room that looks perennially disordered and chaotic. A chaotic living environment is not ideal for the growth of a developing child. Therefore, dedicating ample storage space to one’s child’s bedroom can never be a wrong decision. Moreover, storage units only become more useful with time. Including adjustable storage shelves is a big advantage. Even as teenagers, they will always be in need of space. Therefore, ensuring ample storage in the children’s bedroom can never be a faulty choice.
Color, Layer, and Texture: Color is one of the first things that pops into the mind when one thinks of decor. It is one of the most important elements of any room decoration because it covers the maximum surface area. Therefore, it can be disappointing when the color of the living space does not turn out right. Children, in particular, love colors. Yet it can be a tumultuous decision to fix a color for their room because their preferences can change frequently over time. In such a scenario, one can paint the walls of their room in a neutral shade and introduce vibrant colors through decor and accessories. Decor can always be changed with time with no extra effort. Introducing layering in the curtains and lights is another way to make their bedroom multidimensional and multi-functional. Mood lighting and focussed lighting are just as elemental for a children’s bedroom as they are for an adult’s. Texture can be introduced to the children’s bedroom by adding rugs, carpets, cushions, or pillows. This addition shall also introduce a warm, comfortable, and cozy ambience to their room.
Although designing a kid’s bedroom can be a challenging task, it is also the most exciting one. A child’s fancy knows no bounds and there are numerous ways in which their curious individuality can be reflected in the decor of their room. It should radiate positive energy that allows the child to develop multifarious facets of their personality and have a happy childhood. It is important to strike the right balance while designing children’s bedrooms. They should not be too stimulating, but also not too underwhelming. They should be functional, yet carry whimsical elements that pique their interest. One must not underestimate the impact a child’s living space can have on their development, especially in their formative years. Paying attention to the psychology of the child’s mind, one must design their room in a manner that complements their needs.
