‘Insight/Outside,’ a documentary project by Ravish Pandey (Lecturer, Foundation in Design), won awards for the Best Documentary Film and Best Mobile Phone Film at the Himachal Short Film Festival. Commemorating the three-decade artistic journey of sculptor and practising artist Kishore Chakraborty (Associate Professor, Foundation in Design), the film not only illuminates Chakraborty's creative expression but also underscores the potential of mobile filmmaking in the contemporary cinematic landscape.
The film—showcased at the 3rd Himachal Short Film Festival in Manali, 2023—unfolds in an 18-minute exploration of Chakraborty's life and artistic works. Through curated visuals complemented by a symphony of emotive musical backdrops and evocative voiceovers, the audience is invited to witness the cinematic and artistic tapestry of this contemporary artist.
Produced by Usha Patel (Dean-Academics) and written by Bhawana Jolly, the narrative navigates through four distinct dimensions of Kishore Chakaraborty’s creative expression, providing an intimate portrait of his multifaceted talents ranging from sculpting to two-dimensional craftworks.
Chakraborty's artistic ethos is distinctive not only for its creative depth but also for his unique material selection. Opting for low-cost and humble materials in each of his interventions, Kishore attempts to bridge the gap between the materialistic and the spiritual through concept and execution. Each of his creations featured in the film echoes a profound sense of visceral connection—transcending the confines of the tangible and reaching towards the spiritual realm.
What takes centre stage in ‘Insight/Outside’ is this symbiotic relationship between art and cinema. This documentary not only illuminates the profound impact of Kishore Chakraborty's artistic expressions but also serves as a testament to the burgeoning potential of mobile filmmaking in the contemporary cinematic landscape.
As a beacon of artistic exploration, IIAD takes immense pride in the recognition garnered by ‘Insight/Outside.’ The film not only celebrates the artistic journey of Kishore Chakraborty but also stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of artistic exploration that defines the academic ethos of IIAD.
