Communication Design student Sreeram Jayaram (Batch 2019–23) recently earned the coveted Animation Xpress ANN Award in Mumbai for the Best Student Film category. Initially conceptualised as a college project under the guidance of Shaaz Ahmed (Associate Professor, Communication Design), his 2D animated film 'The Day My Dad Arrives' garnered a lot of appreciation. What adds a unique dimension to the film’s journey of making is its origins from Sreeram's first memory of meeting his father.
Rooted in his personal experiences, the film unfolds an emotional journey, chronicling the longing of a young boy eagerly awaiting his Gulf migrant worker father's return. Under the mentorship of Shaaz Ahmed, the film—initially a major design project (MDP) titled “Personal Narratives"—gradually evolved from audio stories into a visually compelling 2D animated magnum opus. It was the number of positive responses that instilled confidence in Sreeram about the project’s potential.
The developmental process of this project was marked by meticulous research, in-depth interviews, thorough revisions while navigating challenges including tight deadlines and multiple iterations. Offering comprehensive learning, the project stands as a platform for Sreeram, where he not only showcases his distinctive creative expression but also exhibits narrative construction, storytelling, design principles and animation techniques.
Celebrating outstanding achievements and innovations in animation, the Animation Express ANN Awards are one of the most anticipated events in the Indian animation industry. From students to esteemed professionals, this awards ceremony brings together a diverse range of talent, highlighting the excellence and creative ingenuity that propel India's animation landscape forward.
For Sreeram, his ongoing journey stands as a passage of learning, where he continues to embrace each of his creative endeavours wholeheartedly. His passion for animation serves as the guiding force in his artistic pursuits. Contemplating the future, Sreeram envisions his next film with the singular plan of continuing to learn and engaging in what he loves.
This award marks a significant milestone not just for Sreeram but for the animation film industry, the communication design department and the IIAD community at large, opening avenues for exploration and instilling a sense of hope and confidence. On a meta level, it reinforces the IIAD’s dedication to fostering a nurturing environment that encourages creative exploration and innovation among its students.
